About gum disease
Benefits of scaling & root planing
At Antoine Dental Center in Houston, the deep cleaning treatment involves clearing plaque and bacteria out of the periodontal pockets, which develop along the teeth as gum disease worsens. At this stage, simple brushing and flossing are not able to clear the food and bacteria collected at the gum line, which makes scaling and root planing essential for recovery. Either a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic scaler is used for scaling and root planing. A manual scaling tool requires scraping along all areas of the tooth enamel to remove the plaque there, but an ultrasonic scaler clears the plaque away through tiny, high-frequency vibrations. The two methods can also be combined to remove the largest amount of plaque possible.

What is periodontal disease and what can I do about it?
Periodontal disease is a significant infection of your gums and the underlying supportive bone structure. Periodontal disease must be treated as soon as possible because it can cause jaw bone and tooth loss. If it is not treated, it can increase your risk of various conditions, including stroke, heart disease, respiratory disease and even prostate cancer.
Symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Red, swollen gums
- Shifting teeth
- Loose teeth
- High tooth sensitivity
- Painful chewing
- Bleeding gums
- Gums that are tender to the touch
Periodontal disease needs to be treated professionally; these treatments vary depending on how advanced the periodontal disease has gone.
