Tooth-Colored Fillings or Restorations
Most people have heard of tooth decay. What they may not realize is just how common tooth decay really is. For Americans, tooth decay is actually the most common chronic health condition. Tooth decay can occur at any point in a person’s life; if you have teeth, you’re at risk for tooth decay.
Statistically speaking, adults will experience at least one cavity in their lives. This number can be much higher for people with poor oral habits, certain lifestyle factors, or even due to genetics. Previously, cavities were mainly filled with a metal amalgam filling.
These metal fillings were unattractive, and noticeable in your smile. But at the Antoine Dental Center in Houston, TX, we can repair cavities with a much more attractive method: tooth-colored feelings. These attractive fillings match the appearance of your natural teeth; unlike metal fillings, they contain no potentially harmful mercury. In today’s post of our dental health blog, we’re going to tell you a little more about this attractive and safe solution for your teeth.
The 411 on Tooth-Colored Fillings
A tooth-colored dental filling is made from a material known as composite resin. Although composite resin fillings have been around for decades, in years past they weren’t durable enough to use for the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Dental technology has advanced to the point where we can now use composite resin for any and all fillings, secure in the knowledge that they are lasting and strong.
It only takes one appointment to receive a tooth-colored filling. We begin by numbing the area that will receive the filling with local anesthesia. We offer a number of dental sedation options that can help make this a relaxing process. We always want you to feel comfortable and relaxed in our office!
Once your mouth is numb, and you feel relaxed, we will clean the cavity. This includes removing the decayed tissue from your tooth. We then apply composite resin to the cavity. The composite resin acts as almost a putty; we apply it in thin layers to closely match the surface of your teeth.
After we have applied the composite resin and matched it to the surface of your teeth, we then harden it into place with a special light. After the filling has hardened, we will polish it until it matches the sheen of your natural teeth. A completed filling looks just like a natural tooth! There is no recovery time, you will be free to eat and use the tooth within an hour or two of your procedure. Any sensitivity you may experience will fade away within a day or so.
Tooth-colored fillings last for decades if they are cared for properly. You will need to continue brushing your teeth twice a day; this helps remove any build-up of plaque. You will also want to floss to ensure that the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth are also free of decay. We will monitor the status of the filling at your regular dental check-ups.
