What are you afraid of? What makes your skin crawl?
Halloween is months away. Yet everyday there are things that people are afraid to be around. Spiders that crawl up the doorframe… Clowns with their menacing glare… Things that go bump in the night… Dentists who fix your smile?!
Are you one of the millions of Americans who are afraid of the dentist? Dental phobias are actually extremely common; right up there with phobias of spiders, phobias of snakes, and phobias of clowns.
There are many root causes of dental phobias. A fear of the pain of dental care. A fear of being lectured by the dentist about their oral hygiene. A fear of an uncomfortable, unfriendly and uninviting office. A simple fear of the cost of getting dental care.
We want to end your dental phobia. At the Antoine Dental Center we offer many things which can help alleviate your fears and concerns. Our friendly staff will make you feel welcome and never lecture you. Our office is comfortable and filled with complimentary drinks, blankets, and pillows. You can even listen to music or watch TV during your treatment.
But when it comes down to it, these comfort amenities are often not enough if you’re fearful or anxious. So we’re proud to offer the cure for dental phobias and fears: sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry is available for everything from a dental cleaning to a more complex cleaning.
We offer various levels of sedation dentistry depending on your level of fear. So in today’s post, we’re going to tell you a little more about the types of sedation which are available. Let’s get started!
Sedation Level #1: Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation, often called laughing gas, is a common and popular choice for dental sedation. This method has been championed by the World Health Organization for its effectiveness and helped relax countless patients for decades. This level of sedation is best for patients with mild to moderate dental fears and phobias.
Nitrous oxide sedation is comfortably administered through a small nosepiece. As you breathe in the safe mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, you’ll feel light and relaxed. You may not even remember much of the procedure, but you’ll be able to respond to any questions from our staff. Once the sedation is turned off, you’ll go back to feeling normal almost immediately.
Sedation Level #2: Oral Sedation
In recent years, oral sedation has achieved tremendous popularity among patients with higher levels of dental fears or phobias. Oral sedation is also a great choice is you need to undergo a lengthier procedure. Oral sedation is achieved by prescribing you a medicine in pill form to take before your appointment.
By the time your dental treatment begins, you’ll feel completely relaxed. You may not remember much of your appointment, but you’ll quickly see your beautiful smile. Because oral sedation can be long lasting, you will need someone to take you to and from your appointment.
Sedation Level #3: IV Sedation
IV sedation is the strongest form of dental sedation available. As the name implies, it is administered intravenously making it the ideal choice for patients with intense dental phobias, patients with bad gag reflexes, and patients who need to undergo several dental treatments. We are one of the few offices on the area to offer IV sedation.
IV sedation is easily adjustable, so we’ll ensure you are properly sedated throughout your procedure. You’ll feel entirely calm throughout your treatment and won’t remember any of the procedure. When we’ve finished, you’ll be able to show off your great new smile.
