Cavities can happen to anyone who has teeth, no matter their age or situation in life. Luckily, there are a bunch of things you can do to fight back against cavities. In fact that fight can begin with a trip to your local supermarket. In today’s blog entry, we’re going to list some products you can buy to help prevent cavities, as well as some products you should avoid.
Things to Put in Your Cart
Spinach, Kale, and Carrots: Vegetables like spinach, kale, and carrots make a wonderful and tasty addition to your salad. In addition, they can help prevent cavities. High fiber foods such as these help increase the natural flow of saliva in your mouth, this saliva helps wash out the harmful bacteria which causes tooth-decay.
Whole Grain Bread and Pasta: Whole grains are another great source of fiber to add to your diet. In addition to increasing your fiber intake, they are far healthier for your teeth than the alternatives. Bread and pasta made from white flour can be as bad for your teeth as candy. This is because the carbohydrates in those starchy products breaks down into simple sugars very quickly. This leaves your teeth covered in bacteria, and ripe for decay.
Dairy Products: Milk is rich in calcium. The adverts you’ve seen on television are largely true, calcium really does promote bone health and healthy teeth. But if you are lactose-intolerant, don’t despair. There are many other calcium-enriched products on the market to enjoy, including various kinds of alternative milk (such as Soy milk or Almond milk).
A Toothbrush with a Timer: One of the biggest problems adults have in brushing their teeth, is that they often don’t brush for long enough. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two to three minutes at a time, at least twice a day. It can be hard to gauge time when you’re brushing, so you may want to consider buying one of the many toothbrushes on the market that include a built-in timer. For adults, many inexpensive electric toothbrushes include this option. For kids, there are all sorts of fun options, including toothbrushes themed to “Star Wars” and various superheroes.
Fluoride Toothpaste: There are many different options for toothpaste on the market. Some are cheap, some are shockingly expensive. But if you’re worried about preventing cavities, your main concern should be checking your toothpaste for its fluoride content. Fluoride strengthens your enamel against plaque and bacteria; because your enamel is your principal line of defense against cavities, you want to give it all the help you can.
Things To Leave out of Your Cart
Bottled Water: Bottled water is not only bad for the environment, it can also have a negative effect on your teeth. This is because bottled water is free of fluoride. Public water sources, like from your kitchen faucet, have been enriched with fluoride. Studies have shown that people who drink fluoride enriched water have fewer cavities. So save some money, and drink tap water!
