How to keep your gums healthy
Gum disease is often called the “silent disease,” due to the fact that many people don’t realize they have gum disease until they are diagnosed by their dentist. Gum disease can wreak havoc on your health, as it can contribute to bone loss, loose teeth, as well as an increased chance for heart problems, diabetes, and even high blood pressure. If you want to know how to keep your gums healthy, consider the following tips that will help prevent receding gums, bleeding gums, and other gum problems.
Brush your teeth twice a day
It is important that you brush your teeth twice a day in order to keep your gums—and your teeth—as healthy as possible. At minimum, you should brush your teeth once in the morning after breakfast and then again in the evening before you go to bed. If possible, brush after every meal—but if this is not possible, rinse your mouth out with water after a meal to at least get most of the food debris away from your teeth and gums. Make sure that you do not brush right away after eating any foods which are acidic or high in sugar, as this will brush the sugar and acid into your enamel.
Use floss regularly (and use proper flossing techniques)
Flossing is an integral part of preventing gum disease, and it’s one that many people forget to do regularly. You should be flossing at least once a day before bedtime; if possible, floss after eating anything that gets stuck in your teeth (such as popcorn and chips) to help prevent bacteria growth. You should also make sure that you are properly flossing your teeth and not just “clicking” floss in between your teeth; if you aren’t sure how to properly floss, ask your dental hygienist to show you the proper technique.
Rinse with an antiseptic mouth wash twice a day
You can help prevent gum disease by regularly using an antiseptic mouth wash, such as Listerine. An antiseptic mouth wash will help kill bacteria that can lead to cavities, gum disease, and overall poor oral hygiene. For best results, use the mouth wash once in the morning and then once in the evening before you go to bed.
Use a soft tooth brush
Receding gums can sometimes be caused by using a toothbrush with hard bristles or by brushing your teeth too hard. To help prevent damage to your gums from your toothbrush, make sure you are using a soft toothbrush with softer bristles that are designed to be easy on your gums. When you brush your teeth, never press the bristles down into your gums—especially if you are using an electric toothbrush which has more power behind it than a manual brush.
