Do you have minor flaws with your smile that you’d like to change? Sometimes are patients have small flaws in their smile that just drive them crazy. These problems often include things like uneven teeth lengths, small chips in teeth, minor differences in the size of our teeth, small pits in the surface area of the teeth, or the appearance of the cusps of your teeth.
But just because these flaws are small doesn’t mean that they are insignificant. At the Antoine Dental Center in Houston, TX, we can fix many of these problems through simple cosmetic dental procedures. We offer tooth recontouring, also known as tooth reshaping. In addition, we can place inlays and onlays to fix minor problems with your smile.
These simple procedures can help you achieve the smile you desire without braces or other more complicated dental procedures. In addition to helping your smile appear more natural-looking and balanced, these procedures can also be beneficial to your oral health. These procedures can improve tight spaces in your gums, leaving less area for bacteria to get trapped in. In today’s post of our dental blog, we’re going to look at some of the specifics of these procedures.
Teeth recontouring is a quick and easy process. We can achieve tremendous results in just one visit to our comfortable and modern office. The procedure is so easy on your teeth that most post patients do not require anesthesia. (However, we always offer our sedation dentistry services for nervous or fearful patients.)
Teeth recontouring begins with an exam of the health of your teeth. We take digital x-rays to ensure the sensitive inner areas of your teeth (the tissues and nerves inside of a tooth’s dental pulp) will not be affected by tooth recontouring. If your teeth are healthy enough for teeth recontouring, we will proceed with procedure.
During tooth recontouring, we use several tools to reshape your teeth. These tools include a sanding disc, dental sandpaper, and a bur (surgical cutting tool). After we have reshaped your teeth, we then polish them until they appear clean and shiny. Recontouring takes one visit, and generally doesn’t require a follow-up appointment.
Tooth recontouring can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other cosmetic dental procedures. You can combine it with professional teeth whitening for a beautiful new smile. Or with veneers to create a totally new appearance of your smile.
Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are special dental devices which help to improve the appearance of your smile. Inlays and inlays are used to cover the pointed surface of your teeth, called the cusps. Inlays are placed on your molars, they can restore both damage and appearence.
Onlays are larger than inlays, allowing them to cover the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Inlays and onlays are more durable than metal amalgam fillings and metal crowns. In addition, they look more natural. For front teeth, we can construct them out of composite resin or porcelain to match the appearance of your natural teeth. For back teeth, inlays and onlays are generally constructed out of metal, such as gold, for increased durability.
If we determine that you’re a good candidate for inlays or onlays, we can place them in just a few, easy appointments. During your first appointment, we carefully remove the damaged or misshaped portion of the tooth. Afterwards, we carefully take impressions of your teeth. The inlays and onlays are then custom-made in a dental lab. After they are finished, you will come back into our office and we will bond them onto your teeth. With proper care, this treatment can last up to twenty years.
