Have you been told you need to get a tooth removed, and the prospect of such simply terrifies you? If so, you’re not alone. Whether it be impacted wisdom teeth, or a tooth decayed or injured beyond the point of repair, there are many reasons to need to have a tooth removed.
But it doesn’t have to be a frightening experience. At the Antoine Dental Center in Houston, TX we offer pain-free teeth extractions, and a host of other options to help your mouth stay healthy. In today’s blog post, we’re going to look at tooth extractions and describe to exactly what that process entails.
Evaluating The Need for Removal
We will begin by assessing the need to move your tooth. Often times we can repair or a restore a damaged or decayed tooth. However, sometimes the damage to the tooth is too great for this to be a viable option. This is especially true if the tooth in question is preventing you from eating or speaking.
Once we have determined if you need a tooth removed, we can guide you through the process step by step. Sedation dentistry is available for a pain-free procedure that you simply don’t have to worry about.
Removing a Tooth
We begin by taking digital x-rays of your teeth, and on occasion 3D CAT scan images of your mouth. This is gives a detailed look at your tooth, so we can safely remove it in a pain-free manner.
Once we have planned your procedure, we can inform you about the options for sedation dentistry as well as the anesthesia needed for the procedure. We will completely numb the area around the tooth before removing it.
If the crown (top portion) of your tooth is accessible from above your gum line, we can do a quick and simple extraction. But if the tooth is broken, or impacted into your gums, it is possible that we may have to surgically remove the tooth.
Evaluating Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the final teeth to grow into your mouth. They break through your gum line in your late teenage years or your early twenties. You may have problems with your wisdom teeth if they do not fully exit your gums, and are impacted or partially impacted into your gums.
You may need to have your wisdom teeth removed if they are causing you pain or discomfort. Other times, wisdom teeth need to be removed if they are attracting disease and decay; or simply because you do not have enough jaw space for your wisdom teeth.
Replacing Your Removed Tooth
If your tooth is removed for a reason other than a lack of space in your jaw, you may be a candidate for a replacement tooth. Dental implants are fast becoming the most popular option for replacing a missing tooth. For dental implants, we place an artificial root into your gums and then attach an incredibly life-like false tooth in its place.
Dental implants are probably the best option for replacing a tooth, but we have other options available as well. These options include dental bridges and dentures. No matter who you replace a missing tooth, doing so can restore full chewing function and lessen the stress on your remaining teeth.
